ALONGSIDE the art tour in July, the Fifiefofum gallery at Newton is holding an exhibition of work by the Summerhill Ceramics group.

Summerhill Ceramics is a makers group which emerged from a specialised ceramics course at Newcastle College, taught by ceramicist Christine Constant.

The group holds an annual exhibition which provides a tangible focus to the students’ work and provides a context for the end result.

Previous venues include the Cluny Gallery in Newcastle, the Shipley Gallery in Gateshead, and the Gateshead Visitor Centre.

Summerhill Ceramics formed as a group in 2000 to join forces in exhibiting and promoting the members' ceramic work and to make it accessible to a wide section of the public.

The annual mixed group ceramic exhibition (a rarity in the region) is well publicised and displayed to a professional standard.

Members of the group are renowned for their innovative work using a wide range of decorative techniques such as slip decoration, majolica, stoneware, burnishing, smoke and raku firing.

The full range of ceramic techniques is employed including thrown pieces, hand-building, slip casting and press moulding.

Coming from a wide variety of backgrounds and varying in age, arts training, experience and geographic location, the group produces a range of work which is an eclectic mix of functional, sculptural, figurative and decorative ceramics, from the playful to the profound.

Glazed Expression at Fifiefofum from July 5 to 24 will be the group’s only exhibition this year and will show members’ most recent work, which promises to be an exciting collection complementing the work of the Art Tour artists in the gallery.
